Plainrec

Privacy policy

Effective 14 October 2026

In short: Plainrec has no servers and collects no data about you. Your recordings stay on your computer. The only time anything leaves your computer is when you choose to make captions, and then the audio of that one recording goes directly to Google's Gemini API using your own key.

Who we are

Plainrec is a screen recorder extension for Google Chrome. You can reach us at plainrec.app@gmail.com.

What Plainrec stores, and where

Microphone, camera and screen

Plainrec asks Chrome for your microphone or camera only when you turn them on, and captures your screen, window or tab only after you choose it in Chrome's own picker. They are used only to make the recording you started. Plainrec does not listen, watch or record at any other time.

Captions and summaries (optional)

If you press "Make captions and summary", Plainrec extracts the audio of that recording and sends it, with your API key, directly from your browser to Google's Gemini API (generativelanguage.googleapis.com). Google processes it under its own terms and privacy policy. Depending on how your key is set up, Google may use content sent through its free tier to improve its products, so don't use this feature for recordings you need to keep confidential. The result (captions, chapters and summary) is saved with the recording on your computer. Nothing is sent to us.

What we don't do

Chrome Web Store user data policy

Plainrec's use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only to provide the recording, trimming and caption features you see in the extension.

Children

Plainrec is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects how your data is handled, we will also mention it in the extension's update notes.
